The Piedmont Pathway - Trail Scoping Study
The Piedmont Pathway - Trail Scoping Study
Introduction to the Piedmont Pathway
The Gwinnett Countywide Trails Master Plan identified the 28-mile Piedmont Pathway as part of the Core Trail system, and as one of the Signature Trails, of the County's planned network of paved shared use paths. Given the diversity of population groups that this cross-county trail would impact, the wide range of environmental settings it crosses, and the different community needs and priorities found along this corridor, the Piedmont Pathway Trail should be designed to provide multiple social, economic, and environmental sustainability and resiliency benefits. As such, it has the potential to be one of the most exemplary trail projects in the Atlanta Metro Area and in the Southeastern United States.
This scoping study seeks to explore how the trail can be constructed, including its potential alignment, surface, amenities, and environmental impacts. The study will also further the County’s goals that the Piedmont Pathway not only address pedestrian and bicycle connectivity needs throughout Gwinnett, but also will provide an alternative transit mode, increased access to recreation and greenspace, and support regional connectivity to neighboring counties of Dekalb, Fulton, and Barrow. Particularly important will be for the project to advance the County’s stated strategic priorities of:
- organizational excellence and accountability;
- public infrastructure;
- safe, livable, and healthy community;
- sustainability and stewardship; and
- economic opportunities.
